ASHER
I TRIED to stay out of Jesse's way as much as possible the next two weeks. He'd tried to corner me a couple times to convince me to use my own bed, and every night, he fell asleep on the couch before I got home, and I picked him up, carried him to my room, and tucked him in. I wasn't comfortable leaving Jesse alone with a bum leg, so we rotated which one of the guys stayed back with him while the rest of us pursued leads. We kept throwing feelers out on the coyote who'd skipped bail on arson charges, but Simon's fears seemed to be rightâhe'd caught wind of us and vanished. Coyotes were particularly good at vanishing, though. We had other jobs, though, so we kept our ears and eyes out. Sooner or later he'd pop up on our radar. They always did.
And then, finally, two weeks had passed and Doc Martin was at my door again. Even though the day was here, I wasn't excited about thinking about Jesse leaving. Not that I'd let him get close enough to talk his plans through with me. He seemed to be pretty friendly with the other alphas, even Kurt. I couldn't rule out that he would choose one of them. He could do worse. Any of the other guys would be better for Jesse than me. At least Simon, as irresponsible as he was, was closer to Jesse's age.
Doc Martin was putting Jesse through some exercises with the cast on. It seemed able to bear his weight, though Jesse said it felt strange. That could simply be because he hadn't used it much.
"Well, Jesse." Doc Martin took a seat on the arm of the couch. "Everything seems good, but I really would feel more comfortable if I could x-ray the leg, just to make sure everything is completely healed."
I could already see Jesse's hand shaking as he pushed his hair behind his ears. "D-d-do I have to?"
Doc Martin shook his head. "No. But I think it would give both you and I a greater sense of certainty, if you can bear it. And anyone of these fellows can come with you."
Oh no. Not good. I glanced at the other guys' faces, waiting for someone to speak up, to volunteer to accompany Jesse, already knowing that none of them were going to give me the easy way out. Why? They all seemed to get along with Jesse just as well as I did. Better, in fact. Surely he'd be more comfortable with one of them? But no, it was to me Jesse turned and hesitantly asked, "Asher? Would you mind? I think I can handle it if you come with me."
My mouth was answering before my brain caught up. "Of course."
"Well, no time like the present." Doc jumped off the armrest with a bounce. "Sooner started, sooner done."
Jesse gathered his crutches underneath his arms and swung out the door. I followed, but not before I pinned each and every member of my team with a glare.
